Ronnie Fouch and Hans Philipp to enroll early at UW and UofA

Ronnie Fouch (Redlands East Valley) and Hans Phillip (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) will enroll early at the University of Washington and the University of Arizona. Fouch was selected First Team Quarterback All San Bernardino by the Press Enterprise and Phillip was Second Team Defensive Lineman.

Until Washington coach Tyrone Willingham approached Fouch during Thanksgiving break, the REV quarterback never considered graduating early. Washington's starting quarterback this year was a senior, and its backup underwent surgery last month to remove a benign brain tumor, so Fouch could compete for playing time next fall if he has a strong spring.

The lone drawback for Fouch: He may not be able to finish his high school basketball career. Unless he receives permission to remain on the team from the CIF and the Redlands Unified School District, his final basketball game will be at Rialto Carter on Jan. 23 -- two days before the end of fall semester.

"That's really the only downside," said Fouch's mother, Rhonda, REV's athletic director. "We just have to find a way to let him play."

Philipp is eager to enroll at Arizona so he can spend time with his brother Paul Philipp, a senior defensive tackle.

"There's not much of a downside to it," Arroyo Valley coach Tony DiThomas said. "I don't want to say the last semester of your senior year is a waste, but at that point you're really just playing out the string."

Saffrey, Reyes both honored

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kaiser senior Isaac Saffery was regarded as one of the top running backs in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's White Conference since his sophomore year.

After this season, his excellence was affirmed when league coaches named him OIA White Offensive Player of the Year in a recent vote.

At 5 feet 9 and 195 pounds, Saffery had a combination of power, speed and cutting ability that resulted in huge production throughout most of the season.

He finished the year with 1,381 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing on 208 carries (6.6 ypc). In two of his bigger games, Saffery ran for 202 yards and three TDs in a victory over Waialua and 164 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Roosevelt.

His rushing total was fourth-best in the state, and his 108 points scored ranked third.

One team that was able to contain Saffery was Kaimuki, which held him to a combined 37 yards on 21 carries in two victories, including a 26-13 win in the OIA White semifinals. Leading the Bulldogs' defense this season was lineman Keone Reyes, a 5-11, 250-pound senior.

Reyes' athleticism and versatility — he played both tackle and end and also some middle linebacker — was a key part of Kaimuki's success. The Bulldogs finished as White runners-up and qualified for the Division II state tournament, and coaches named him Defensive Player of the Year.

"Keone was a dominant force for our defense all year long," Kaimuki coach Daniel Mafua said. "Most of our guys had to play both ways and they really had to suck it up, but Keone enjoys playing defense and he always had that extra push to be a leader. He led by example, through his actions."

Reyes, who helped the Bulldogs win the OIA basketball championship last season en route to Advertiser All-State first-team honors, used quickness and a variety of moves to be effective against the run and pass.

"He doesn't look quick, and his speed is deceptive because he has those long strides," Mafua said. "But he would catch a lot of (opposing backs and receivers) and run them down. He would do all that on defense, and then turn around and play offensive tackle. He really grew as a player this season and helped us achieve what we did, getting to the championship game."

Kaiser led the way with seven all-star first-team selections: Saffery, wide receiver Kalua Noa, offensive linemen Lono Awong and Brice Kahalewai, defensive linemen Tukia Aholelei and Bronson McMoore, linebacker C.J. Criado and defensive back Jake Esteban.

OIA White champion Waipahu was next with six: offensive linemen Castro Masaniai and Mike Tevaga, defensive lineman James Tivao, defensive back Neil Paguyo and linebackers Aaron Pa'ahana and Lele Pefua.

Kaimuki and Waialua each was represented by three players. The Bulldogs placed Reyes, defensive back Joshwa Salvador and utility player Dolly Ainu'u.

Waialua was represented by quarterback Caleb Fore and receivers Adam Foster and Edwin Rubio. Pearl City placed two: running back/utility player Antoin Dewalt and defensive back Alfred Paclib. Nanakuli offensive lineman Kemika Kaimi rounds out the first team.

Waialua's Lincoln Barit was named Coach of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to a rare playoff berth.

Sacramento-Joaquin Section 2006 Polynesian Football All Stars

A large contingent of Samoans and Tongans in the Sacramento-Joaquin Section have been honored in the post-season for the work on the field this past season including Grant HS Defensive Lineman Christian Tupou who was named SacBee Metro Defensive Player of the Year. Tupou helped lead Grant to an undefeated season and a DII section title. In addition, Tupou was selected 1st Team All Section Defensive Lineman.

Defensive player of the year -- Christian Tupou

By Bill Paterson - Bee Staff Writer

Christian Tupou, a three-year varsity starter, was the "motor" of an experienced Grant line that made opposing running backs pay for every yard.

"Christian plays with tremendous intensity and integrity," Alberghini said. "He was always willing to do a little bit more.

"As a sophomore, he didn't say much, but when we asked some players to do a little extra running, and a few of them balked, he told them, 'Do it or get out of here.' I knew from that point on we had someone who was going to emerge as a leader."

That leadership spilled over into the classroom, where Tupou is a model student and campus leader. Because of that and his growing 6-3, 275-pound frame, Tupou perhaps is the Pacers' hottest recruit. He credits his parents and five siblings for emphasizing grades.

"From first period to last period, all I'm thinking about is school," Tupou said. "Once it's time for football, my focus is completely on the field."

With his 3.8 cumulative GPA and 21 sacks over two seasons, Tupou has received scholarship offers from eight schools, including Arizona and Nebraska, both of which he has visited.

"With his size and strength, he's probably the most prepared to go out and play in college," Alberghini said.

Palo Alto OL: Fred Koloto

Friday Dec 15

Victor Maccharoli / Daily News

The aggressive play of two-way star lineman Fred Koloto should help Palo Alto in Saturday's state championship game.

Paly lineman Koloto one of the best

It's no wonder Palo Alto offensive guard and defensive tackle Fred Koloto was chosen as the most valuable lineman in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division the past two years. The senior Koloto, who leads the Vikings' line in Saturday's state title game vs. Orange Lutheran, is one of the most sought-after Vikings in the history of the school.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Koloto has seven concrete Division I offers - from Nebraska, Washington, BYU, Utah, San Jose State, Fresno State and San Diego State.

"It's an honor to be named most valuable lineman in the league," Koloto said. "All my hard work and everything my parents had to go through with me. My coaches, my teammates. It wasn't just me, it was them who helped me out. All the credit goes to them for making me the player that I am right now."

"Koloto's strength is that he's consistent," Paly head coach Earl Hansen said. "He's very tough. He knocks a guy down and he's right back ready for the next play."

The Vikings often run over left guard where Koloto resides. Reaping the benefit are fullback Sione Mataele and halfbacks Will Frazier and Evan Warner.

"I've gained a lot of yards running over Fred (Koloto)," Frazier said. "I like running behind him."

On defense, Koloto rotates series with Kyle Bristol and sometimes Mataele. Against Orange Lutheran, Koloto may be asked to play more downs defensively.

"Whatever helps our team," Koloto said. "Whatever it takes for us to win that game, I'll do it. I like offense because that's what I'm projected to play in college. I like playing defense, hitting quarterbacks and running backs. At the same time, I like blasting middle linebackers and putting them on their backs."

The surprising tidbit about Koloto's success is that he didn't take up the game of football until his freshman year at Palo Alto. He learned quickly, becoming a two-way starter on the varsity since his sophomore year. He snaps on PATs and field goals.

Playing in the state title game is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Koloto.

"It's exciting for me," Koloto said. "I've never experienced this level of playing competition that I'm going to be facing on Saturday. We've played in two CCS title games, but this game is going to be the biggest game of my life, so far. Hopefully, later on, I'll have more coming for me."

Koloto said the Vikings, ranked No. 20 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, aren't going down to Carson just to show up and be handled by the No. 4-ranked Lancers.

"Our main goal was to win our league and CCS," Koloto said. "Playing in the state game was never in our thoughts. Now we want to get this thing done. We're not going down there and have fun. This is business for us. All the talk about them, that they're the best, we don't care about that. We're going down there to represent ourselves, represent our school, represent our community, the Northern Cal."

And Koloto doesn't mind being the underdog.

"If that's the role they want us to be in, I'm fine with it," Koloto said. "When we're successful, it just shows how much heart we have and how hard we have worked as a team."

Koloto could be matched up against Lancers massive defensive tackle Michael Reardon, who earned a ride to USC. A good game by Koloto Saturday, maybe a pancake or two of Reardon, might land Koloto even more offers.

"For me, I'm not worried about the recruiting process right now," Koloto said. "My main focus is to help this team and win this thing. After all is said and done, then I'll get into making my choices for next year."

Koloto doesn't have any particular game that was a memorable one. This game vs. Orange Lutheran could very well be memorable for Koloto and the Vikings.

"All the games are memorable for me," Koloto said. "It's an honor to come to Palo Alto and win CCS and hopefully getting it done at state."

If you're watching in person on Saturday, keep the binoculars on No. 72. One of Paly's greatest lineman will be playing with all his heart in his final game as a Viking.

Laney LB: Logan U'u verbals to Minnesota

Logan U'u of Laney College and Skyline High School (Oakland, CA) will be fellow Samoan Nedward Tavale at Minnesota next year.

Junior College linebacker commits to U
Zach Johnson

Minnesota went back to the junior college ranks for the sixth time this year to bring in another linebacker. Craig Bray has several connections in the California junior college scene and he is solidifying that reputation in his first season at Minnesota with the recent addition of Laney College's Logan Uu.

The original plan was to decide after a weekend visit to Washington State.

"I committed to Minnesota this morning and I am very excited about it. I was going to visit Washington State over the weekend but decided to cancel it because it just wasn't needed."

"I pretty much knew all along that I was going to end up at Minnesota and it was very clear on Wednesday night. Coach Bray and Coach Criner stopped by my house so they could meet with me and my family."

"It was so easy because of my relationship with both of the coaches at Minnesota. I really was able to get really close with them over the past two weeks. I really feel confident in how they feel about me and what they think I can do for Minnesota."

It was a dream come true fro Uu.

"It has always been my dream to earn a scholarship to a major college football program and it feels great to finaly get there. I will be in Minnesota in about three or four weeks and I cannot wait to get there."

"I am going to try my hardest to fill the goal the Gopher coaches have for me. They told me that they want me to bring my leadership skills as well as my energy and intensity."

Minnesota has another thought in mind fro Uu.

"I guess I will be one of the few Samoan players in the Big Ten and if they had it their way they would have a lot more of them. They told me that they wanted my help in finding more of us and I have a lot of good ones in my backyard."

The commitment from Uu is the second Laney College graduate to verbal to Minnesota this week. On Monday wide receiver Marc Cheatham committed to the Golden Gophers.

Lesu, Paredes double trouble

Advertiser Staff

When O'ahu Interscholastic Association football coaches say Farrington's Elijah Lesu and Castle's Corey Paredes were "all over the field" this past season, they really mean it.

The two seniors each excelled on offense and defense and earned first team all-star honors on both sides of the ball after a vote of OIA Red Conference Eastern Division coaches.

Lesu was named Offensive Player of the Year for his efforts at wide receiver and Paredes was named Defensive Player of the Year for his performance at linebacker. But both contributed in every facet of the game.

The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Lesu caught 43 passes for 713 yards and nine touchdowns, including eight catches for 234 yards and four TDs against Moanalua. He became the Governors' primary target after quarterback Elijah Filifili broke his hand and was replaced by receiver Maeli Siliga.

"It did help when we had both (receivers)," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "When (Filifili) went down, (Lesu) became the go-to guy."

Lesu was a starting cornerback in 2005 and played that position and free safety this season, and he also returned punts and kicks.

"He was Farrington's big-play man," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said.

Paredes made a lot of the big plays for Castle, especially on defense.

At 5-11, 203 pounds, he "hit like a linebacker and ran like a wide receiver," Maeda said.

In a late-season loss at Kahuku, Paredes made 14 tackles — seven solo — blocked a field goal and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. Against Moanalua, he made 12 tackles — eight solo — and caused a fumble to help the Knights win, 27-14.

Maeda said Paredes, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, was extra effective on blitzes.

"He brought energy to the game, and the opponents always had to be aware of where he was," Maeda added. "He must have averaged at least 10 tackles a game. He had a tremendous season, and he hardly came off the field."

On offense, Paredes caught 32 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns. He also took over punting duties late in the season.

East co-champion Kahuku led the way with 12 players selected to the all-star first team, including four of the five offensive linemen (Benji Kemoeatu, John Manu-Plevao, Spencer Mauai and Ross Salanoa).

The other Red Raiders on the first team are running back Lehi Aumua, defensive linemen Nai Fotu and Kaniela Tuipulotu, linebackers Sifa Heimuli and Siaosi Tafuna, defensive backs Gary Nagy and Shiloah Te'o and utility player Richard Torres.

Farrington was next with six first-team picks: Lesu, running back Hercules Sula, offensive lineman Fetalaiga Fatu, defensive back Jimmy Robinson and defensive linemen Sam Fehoko and Andrew Noga.

In addition to Lesu and Paredes, Castle's Scott Keiter-Charles also was named at two different positions, making the first team at receiver and defensive back.

Kalaheo quarterback Cody vonAppen rounds out the first team.

Paredes and Keiter-Charles are the only repeat selections; they both made the all-star first team on defense last season.

Kahuku's Reggie Torres was named Coach of the Year in his rookie season. The Red Raiders returned only four starters, two each on offense and defense

Franklin HS (Seattle, WA): Peyton Siva

Keep an eye out for Peyton Siva (6'0, 160, Soph) of Franklin High School in Seattle on the football field as well as the basketball court. Siva was selected 2nd Team All KingCo 4A the past two seasons at wide receiver.

Franklin's Peyton Siva has the best hops the city has seen since Nate Robinson left Rainier Beach to begin his failed football career. Siva is competitive like Robinson, too. After injuring his wrist at Garfield last year, Siva returned to the bench, let his trainer wrap it up -- then, apparently learning that this would keep him out of the game, started tearing the wrap off.

The trainer had to grab him and pull him back into his seat to keep him from reporting to the scorer's table.

Like Robinson, Siva's a two-sporter. Unfortunately, he broke his collarbone playing football, but he returned to the basketball court Tuesday. Naturally, he was way ahead of schedule.

Portland State's Brennan Carvalho named AP DI-AA All American

Portland State football players Adam Hayward and Brennan Carvalho were each named first team Associated Press All-American for NCAA 1-AA football today. It marks the first time that two Viking players have been named to the AP All-America first team in the same season.

Carvalho, a junior offensive lineman from Kapa’a, HI, has earned his second All-American honor in a week. Carvalho was named to the Walter Camp 1-AA All- America football team last Friday.

A three-year starter for the Vikings. The 6-1, 310-pound left guard has been named first team All-Big Sky Conference the past two seasons in a row. Prior to the start of the 2006 season, Carvalho was rated as the top offensive guard in the nation and a preseason All- American by The Sports Network.

In 2006, Carvalho was a key player on the Vikings' 7-4 team. He will anchor an offensive line that returns three All-Big Sky Conference players (including Peter St. John and Daren Heerspink) in 2007.

Hawai'i Offensive Lineman: Dane Uperesa

Dane Uperesa was recently selected District VIII All-Academic Team in addition to being named Second Team All WAC. Uperesa is preparing for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on December 24, 2006 and has been selected to play in the Hula Bowl All Star Game.

Not much down time for Warriors' Uperesa

The Hawaii football team had last week off, but Dane Uperesa didn't stop working.

"Not really," the senior starting right tackle said, when asked if he got to relax a little.

"I've been writing my thesis paper and it's about 40 to 50 pages. I had to dedicate a lot of time to the computer." Uperesa is among the Warrior seniors who graduate Sunday. Yesterday, he learned he was named to the District VIII All-Academic team. Uperesa, who has a cumulative GPA of 3.63, is getting a degree in communications.

His thesis deals with the effects of media exposure on body image for males.

"In the research we came across reverse anorexia. Some guys work out too much and it can cause problems," Uperesa said.

Of course, there are some athletes who don't work out enough. Uperesa said the Warriors didn't suffer that problem last week, as players still found their way to the weight room during the lull before practices for the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl against Arizona State.

"We worked out, but we also all definitely took some time away from football last week, and that's good. Heal the body up. Of course the winning made the weeks go by faster. We were so immersed in football for 12 straight weeks," Uperesa said. "It's good to get away from it, especially around finals week."

The Warriors (10-3) have one big onfield exam remaining in the Sun Devils (7-5). A victory in the Hawaii Bowl allows UH to tie the school record for wins in a season. It could also propel the Warriors into the final polls after the Dec. 2 loss to Oregon State to end the regular season knocked them out of the rankings.

Yesterday, the team went through a light hour-long workout, and will do the same tomorrow after taking today off.

Uperesa said he's fully recovered from a bent wrist that sidelined him for the last four plays of the Oregon State loss.

"I put a brace on it and it was sore the next morning, but I'm ready to go now," he said.

The Sun Devils arrive next Monday and will be staying at the Sheraton Waikiki. The Warriors move into their Hawaii Bowl rooms at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider on the same day.

Li‘ili‘i, Kauwalu best of West

Advertiser Staff

Even an injured Lofa Li'ili'i proved to be more than a handful for opposing defenses in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's West Division this season.

Meanwhile, George Kauwalu was a menace for every opposing offense.

Li'ili'i, an 'Aiea receiver, was named OIA West Offensive Player of the Year and Kauwalu, a Wai'anae linebacker, was named Defensive Player of the Year in a recent vote of division coaches.

Li'ili'i was slowed by a high ankle sprain suffered early in the season, but still ended up with 43 catches for 536 yards (12.5 ypc) and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 41 times for 170 yards, and returned a punt 85 yards for a TD against Leilehua.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior also served as an effective decoy, drawing defenders his way to open up routes for teammates Alan Fonoti (44 catches, 552 yards, 6 TDs), James Buchanan (34-368, 3 TDs) and Daniel Li'ili'i (32-304, 2 TDs).

"The other coaches thought Lofa was always a threat, so they were prepared to cover him," said Wendell Say, who completed his 15th season as 'Aiea's head coach. "I think he's probably the best receiver we ever had."

Kauwalu, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, also will go down as one of the all-time greats from his school. His ball-hawking quickness and punishing hits made an impression on almost every opposing offense the past two years.

"Not only can he hit, but he can cover (receivers), too," Say said. "He's one of the best linebackers I've seen in a long time."

Kauwalu's play on defense helped the Seariders clinch the West Division championship with a week to spare.

'Aiea and Wai'anae led the West with five players each named to the all-star first team. Li'ili'i is joined by fellow Na Ali'i receiver Fonoti, utility player Daniel Li'ili'i, offensive lineman Mako Malepeai and linebacker Mana Ohia.

Kauwalu is joined by Seariders offensive linemen William Duseigneur and Alex Tupulua, defensive lineman Fred Ellis and defensive back Preston Ayala.

Leilehua was represented by four players, Kapolei and Radford each placed three and Mililani had two on the first team.

Two players — Kapolei's Kamuela Foki and Radford's Kyle Blair — were selected at two positions. Foki made it as a running back and defensive back. Blair was picked as a receiver and a defensive utility player.

Lofa Li'ili'i, Kauwalu, Malepeai, Ohia, Ayala and Mililani's Matt Hunt are repeat first-team selections.

Wai'anae's Danny Matsumoto was named Coach of the Year.

Pisa Tinoisamoa fractures right hand

Rams Notebook: Tinoisamoa fractures right hand
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
12/12/2006

FILE PHOTO: Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson (left) looses his helmet after being hit by St. Louis Rams linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa.

Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa is down to no healthy arms. First came a dislocated left elbow. Then a broken left hand. Next was a sprained right shoulder. And on Monday, midway through the first quarter against Chicago, Tinoisamoa suffered a fractured right hand.

"It's really a similar fracture to the one in his other hand," coach Scott Linehan said. "I think it might even be the same bone. I don't know what the odds of that happening are."

Tinoisamoa was replaced by veteran Dexter Coakley at outside linebacker against the Bears. Tinoisamoa did not return.

Tinoisamoa's string of injuries began with the elbow injury in Week 2 at San Francisco. Interestingly, Monday's game against Chicago marked the first time since that injury that Tinoisamoa did not have the elbow wrapped or fitted for a brace.

CC of San Francisco's Alesana Alesana verbals to Kansas State

Alesana Alesana of City College of San Francisco has verballed to Kansas State. Alesana was a first team All Nor Cal selection. Assuming Alesana goes to Kansas State he will be a teammate of current Wildcat Moses Manu.

Alesana makes a decision
Brian Gates
City College of San Francisco offensive lineman Alesana Alesana visited Kansas State during the Thanksgiving weekend. It was his second visit at the time in as many weeks. Now, after thinking about his options, the three-star rated tackle prospect has reached a decision on where he wants to play his college football.
"Not a whole lot has really happened," the 6-foot-6, 318-pound Alesana said with a laugh. "The only thing that has gone on is that I called up the Kansas State coaches today and told them I wanted to be a Wildcat. I talked to both Coach Tim McCarty and Coach Matt Wallerstedt and told them I was committing."

Alesana has not given the word to the other schools that were recruiting him.

"I will call the other schools tonight or tomorrow. I just knew after the visit to Kansas State that it was what I wanted to do. I just didn't want to do it on the visit. I needed to think about it some.

"I felt good about the school and about the team. The players were great to be around and the coaches are outstanding."

Alesana also visited with his parents who are back home in his native Samoa.

"I called my parents and talked with them. They listened to me and then told me they thought I sounded pretty happy with the choice. They told me whatever I wanted to do, they would support my choice."

Alesana will arrive in Manhattan for the spring semester.

"I graduate in December. So, I'll sign with them next week and then enroll and start school in January. I am really excited to be getting there to play with the team and the returning players will make it a very good team."
