Oakland Raiders sign Toniu Fonoti

The Oakland Raiders signed free agent Guard Toniu Fonoti (Nebraska/Kahuku HS/Oceanside El Camino HS) formerly of the Minnesota Vikings and the San Diego Chargers. Fonoti joins fellow Samoans Marques Tuiasosopo and his younger brother Zach Tuiasosopo (Washington/Woodinville HS, WA) who is on the practice squad. Fonoti's two younger brothers Tauala'i and Lauli both respectively attend Stanford and New Mexico State where they play football.

Contra Costa Times article

"The Raiders did make their initial foray into the free-agent market Tuesday by signing veteran guard Toniu Fonoti to a one-year, $1 million contract that includes a $400,000 signing bonus.

Fonoti, 25, appeared in only three games last season for the Vikings and ended the season on injured reserve with a groin injury. He missed all of the 2003 season with a foot injury.

Fonoti, a second-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2002, is a talented player with a penchant for injury and a weight-control problem. He is listed as 6-foot-4 and 350 pounds.

However, he reportedly showed up at close to 400 pounds when he reported to the Vikings last season.

He likely will replace Brad Badger at left guard, with Badger perhaps taking over for recently released Ron Stone at right guard."
