ASU's Michael Marquardt To Receive Post-Graduate Scholarship

Michael Marquardt, a defensive tackle on the 2007 Arizona State University football team, is the 2008 recipient of a postgraduate scholarship presented annually by the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Chapter Executive Director Dan Manucci announced Friday.

Marquardt and several local high school football student-athletes will be honored at the Chapter's annual Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Scottsdale Hilton Resort, 6333 North Scottsdale Road. Marquardt enjoyed two excellent seasons with the Sun Devils, starting all 23 games he played in Tempe. He earned honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference honors both years and was one of the top defensive tackles in the conference. A mature leader and an excellent student-athlete, he was a two-time First-Team Pac-10 All-Academic selection and was also recognized within the team for his achievements in the classroom.

Marquardt was named a semifinalist for the 2007 Draddy Trophy, nicknamed the "Academic Hesiman". He was invited to appear in the 2008 East-West Shrine game. Marquardt collected 48 career tackles at ASU (29 solo) with 9.0 tackles for loss (minus 36 yards), 3.5 sacks (minus 20 yards), two fumble recoveries and one pass deflection.

As a senior in 2007 Marquardt earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 recognition and First-Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors. He was a recipient of ASU's Cecil Abono Team Captain Award at the team's year-end banquet.

In his final regular-season game Marquardt blocked a 47-yard Jason Bondzio field goal attempt, recovered a Willie Tuitama fumble and added a solo tackle against rival Arizona on Dec. 1, earning the Ben Goo Trophy for the game's Most Valuable Player. In ASU's Holiday Bowl contest versus Texas, he totaled six tackles (five solo) and recovered a fumble on Dec. 27, his final game for ASU.

As a junior in 2006 Marquardt earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors and earned ASU's Clyde B. Smith Award for academic excellence, presented at the team's year-end banquet. Marquardt was recognized as a First-Team Pac-10 All-Academic selection, earning a 3.64 GPA as an urban planning student. On the campaign he totaled 25 tackles (18 solo), 7.5 tackles-for-loss (minus 34 yards), 3.5 sacks (minus 20 yards) and finished second to Dexter Davis among Sun Devil linemen in sacks and tackles-for-loss.

In 2005 Marquardt sat out the season after transferring to ASU as a member of the scout team and earned the Glen Hawkins Scout Team Award for his outstanding performance as a member of the scout team defense.

Marquardt was named a PrepStar magazine All-American and was named All C.I.F. and all-league as a senior at Rancho Buena Vista High School. Marquardt played the 2007 season as a graduate student with a major in urban planning. His parents are Peter and Betty Ann Marquardt. He is married to wife Camilla, an interior designer.
