Oak Ridge High School's Brett Thompson impresses

Football season doesn't start until September, but high school teams will hit the field next week for summer conditioning, as do community college programs.

As for college recruiting, it's a year-round animal that roars right through summer.

Two months before the first game, the region's top prep recruit appears to be Brett Thompson of Oak Ridge High School, a 6-foot-3 receiver with scholarship offers from Nebraska and BYU (where former Oak Ridge star Austin Collie plays).
