It doesn't get any bigger than this. Quite literally.
Friday's 4A championship will match perennial powerhouses Timpview and Cottonwood, but it will also pit two heralded lineman directly against each other.
Cottonwood offensive lineman John Martinez is uncommitted and perhaps the top lineman in the state. Timpview defensive lineman Xavier Su'A Filo is one of the top defensive recruits in the state.
This is going to be interesting, even though the two are friends.
"I've been telling him, no matter what happens, we'll still be boys," Martinez said.
Things don't figure to be very friendly Friday, though. The two linemen are on teams playing for perfection.
But the long-anticipated state final between Cottonwood and Timpview, the only teams to go 10-0 in the regular season, almost didn't happen. In fact, thanks to late rallies from both of their opponents, the 4A state final came within a few field goals of hosting two different teams.
But they made it, setting up a matchup between two of the nation's top high school big men. Ever since last season's 31-13 quarterfinal loss to Timpview, Martinez has been waiting to get a second chance at Su'A Filo.
With so much on the line, both linemen were relatively tight-lipped about Friday's matchup.
