Faith carries Troy
A fresh new outlook has turned around Waipahu RB Matautia's life
They knew Troy Matautia could play the game.
But that was on the Division II level, where Waipahu hovered for two seasons. This year, up in the rugged OIA Red West, Matautia and his fellow Marauders proved their worth.
The 5-foot-6, 200-pound senior ran around and through defenders for 1,227 yards and 15 touchdowns in just nine games. Including his return yardage, Matautia amassed more than 1,900 yards.
The former quarterback did his best work, however, off the gridiron. As the youngest of four children, he helped his mother glue the pieces back together when their family broke apart four years ago.
On Friday, he will play against a team of mainland all-stars.
