Mosese Foketi always wanted a shot to start at nose tackle for the Brigham Young football team, but never at the expense of a trusted friend and mentor.
An MRI on Monday confirmed BYU's suspicion that Russell Tialavea tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Saturday's scrimmage, and also revealed he tore the medial collateral ligament.
The redshirt sophomore from Oceanside, Calif., will miss the season and will likely have surgery sometime this week.
Meanwhile, the search for Tialavea's replacement began in earnest during BYU's morning practice on Monday with Foketi and freshman Eathyn Manumaleuna moving up in the preseason depth chart, and Garrett Reden moving from the offensive line to the defensive line for a three-day trial run.
"I hate to see it happen like this, because over here at the Y., you have to earn your time," said Foketi, a 6-foot, 270-pound redshirt junior who transferred from Laney Community College in Oakland, Calif. "But you know, Russ told me I have to represent, so I am trying to use everything he taught me staying after practice to go over plays. I am just trying to fill his shoes."
