Prep football: Sofele rushes to victory

Running back Isi Sofele has been a huge factor in Cottonwood's success all season. And even when opposing defenses key in on the running back, Sofele still manages to be as elusive as he was at the beginning of the year.
Pine View knows just how dangerous Sofele can be, but couldn't stop him from scoring all three touchdowns in the Colts' 19-14 win over Pine View at Rice Eccles Stadium on Friday.
"He's going to find a way every time," said Cottonwood coach Cecil Thomas. "He has the warrior mentality. He's what you want."
There were times when the Panthers could slow him down. But just when it seemed the defense had figured Sofele out, he would explode for a big run, like the 48-yard touchdown he had in the third quarter.
"They were physical but the O-line executed on every play," Sofele said. "They were confused about where I would run the ball. We were more in shape. I just had that mentality, to give it my all and leave everything out on the field."
Sofele led his team with 139 rushing yards on 21 carries. Even though he had two touchdowns in the first half - a 6-yard run in the first quarter and 4-yard rush in the second - he had a better performance in the third and fourth quarters. He had more than 100 rushing yards in the second half.
